In November 2023, Northvolt, a battery manufacturer based in Europe, declared that it had created a battery that was devoid of all essential minerals.
CEO and co-founder of Northvolt, Peter Carlsson, spoke his thoughts on sodium-ion batteries with Business Sweden’s global head of energy, Anna Liberg, during the UN Climate Conference in Dubai, often known as COP28.
“Sodium-ion has high hopes around the world, and I’m happy to report that we have developed a technology that will enable its widespread deployment to accelerate the energy transition,” stated Carlsson. It’s a significant turning point for Northvolt’s business plan, but battery innovation like this is also essential to achieving the world’s sustainability objectives by increasing electrification’s affordability, sustainability, and accessibility on a global scale.
Northvolt, in collaboration with Altris, has created sodium-ion technology. It states that it serves as the basis for the next-generation energy storage products from Northvolt. According to the company’s website, “the technology is especially attractive for energy storage solutions in upcoming markets including India, the Middle East, and Africa because of its low cost and safety at high temperatures.”
