India’s solar energy sector continues to play an important role in the country’s clean energy transition. With increasing demand for electricity, government support, technological advancements and growing investments, solar power is becoming one of the most promising segments of India’s renewable energy industry.
Major Developments in India’s Solar Industry
One of the biggest developments is India’s estimated requirement of approximately $220 billion in clean energy investment between 2027 and 2030. According to government estimates, around $70–75 billion could be directed towards solar power projects. The investment will also support electricity transmission, battery storage, wind energy, green hydrogen and domestic manufacturing.
India Expands Its Solar Power Capacity
India’s solar industry has achieved remarkable growth. According to recent industry reports, the country’s installed solar capacity reached approximately 174.8 GW in the third quarter of 2026, accounting for around 57.7% of its renewable energy capacity. This growth reflects increasing installations of large-scale solar parks, rooftop solar systems and commercial solar projects.
New Opportunities in Floating Solar Projects
Another important development is the government’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana. The scheme has an estimated budget of ₹5,070 crore and aims to develop 5,000 MW of floating solar projects with 10,000 MWh of associated energy storage by 2030–31.
Floating solar technology can generate electricity using reservoirs and other suitable water bodies. It also creates new opportunities for solar panel manufacturers, EPC companies and renewable energy developers.
Battery Storage and Solar Technology
Battery energy storage is becoming increasingly important for the solar industry. Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, but consumers also require power during the evening and night. Advanced lithium-ion batteries and large-scale battery storage systems can help store surplus electricity and supply it when required.
Uttar Pradesh is also considering an investment of ₹5,500 crore in battery storage infrastructure to strengthen its green energy supply and manage peak electricity demand.
Growing Opportunities for Solar Businesses
The expansion of solar energy is creating opportunities for manufacturers of solar modules, inverters, batteries, mounting structures, cables and other electrical equipment. Rooftop solar installations are also opening new business opportunities for distributors, dealers, installers and service providers.
