India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry is witnessing growing consumer interest during the Diwali festive season, with electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers and electric passenger vehicles attracting attention from buyers. The festive period is traditionally one of the strongest sales seasons for the Indian automobile industry, and EV manufacturers are looking to benefit from increased purchasing activity.
According to the latest industry data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on November 6, 2026, India’s total EV retail sales reached approximately 3.55 lakh units in October 2026, registering an impressive 44.88% year-on-year growth compared with October 2025. EVs accounted for approximately 11.5% of total vehicle retail sales, compared with around 6% a year earlier.
Electric Two-Wheelers Lead the Market
Electric two-wheelers emerged as the biggest contributors to India’s EV growth. The segment recorded approximately 2.23 lakh units in October 2026, representing 48% growth compared with the same month last year. TVS Motor Company led the segment with 60,429 electric two-wheeler registrations, becoming the first Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturer to cross 60,000 monthly sales.
Electric Car Sales Show Strong Growth
The electric passenger vehicle segment also delivered an impressive performance. October 2026 recorded approximately 36,911 electric car sales, compared with 20,954 units in October 2025, marking around 76% annual growth.
Tata Motors retained its leadership position in the electric passenger vehicle market, followed by Mahindra and JSW MG Motor. Improved driving ranges, expanding charging infrastructure and new vehicle launches are encouraging more customers to consider electric cars.
Diwali 2026 Expected to Boost EV Demand
With Dhanteras celebrated on November 6 and Diwali falling on November 8, automobile dealers are expecting strong festive demand. However, industry representatives have highlighted supply constraints in certain electric two-wheeler and passenger vehicle categories. This could affect the number of vehicles delivered during the festive period.
Future Outlook for India’s EV Industry
The Diwali season could provide another boost to India’s electric mobility industry. Rising fuel costs, growing environmental awareness, attractive financing options, improved battery technology and increasing consumer confidence are supporting EV adoption.
Manufacturers are also focusing on affordable electric scooters, electric cars, commercial EVs and advanced battery technologies to capture the growing market.
The latest figures indicate that India’s EV industry is entering an important growth phase. If manufacturers overcome supply challenges and continue improving affordability and charging infrastructure, electric vehicles could become an increasingly important part of India’s automobile market.
