India has taken another major step towards strengthening its renewable energy sector, with the government highlighting the importance of solar power, clean energy investment and energy security at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 in New Delhi.
1. India Achieves 50% Non-Fossil Power Capacity Milestone
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has achieved more than 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of the 2030 target. India has already developed nearly 300 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity and is working towards adding another 500 GW over the coming years.
2. ₹20 Lakh Crore Investment Opportunities in Clean Energy
India’s renewable energy industry is expected to attract investment opportunities worth approximately ₹20 lakh crore ($220 billion) by 2030. This investment will support solar power projects, wind energy, battery storage, domestic manufacturing, green hydrogen and electricity transmission infrastructure. Solar energy is expected to receive a significant share of this investment.
3. Solar Power Capacity Continues to Grow
India’s solar energy sector is witnessing rapid expansion. According to government figures, installed solar capacity reached approximately 164.59 GW by July 31, 2026, compared with just 2.8 GW in 2014. India has also emerged as one of the world’s leading solar power growth markets, creating new opportunities for manufacturers, EPC companies and solar equipment suppliers.
4. Rooftop Solar Creates New Opportunities
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana continues to encourage households to install rooftop solar systems. Government figures reported more than 51 lakh beneficiary households by August 2026. The programme is helping families reduce electricity expenses while encouraging the adoption of clean energy across residential areas.
5. Battery Storage Becomes Important for Solar Energy
Energy storage is becoming a major priority for India’s renewable energy industry. Solar power generation depends on sunlight, making battery storage essential for supplying electricity during evening and nighttime hours. Proposed storage requirements for new government renewable energy projects could further increase demand for lithium-ion batteries and advanced energy storage solutions.
6. New Business Opportunities for Solar Companies
India’s growing solar market offers significant opportunities for solar panel manufacturers, inverter companies, battery manufacturers, distributors, installation companies and maintenance service providers. Increasing demand from residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial customers is expected to support further industry expansion.
