Statera, a UK developer-operator of battery energy storage systems (BESS), has filed a planning application for a 500 MW project in Oxfordshire, England.
The business applied to South Oxfordshire District Council for a 500 MW BESS at Culham Campus, which was once the Culham Science Centre of the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).
Statera’s Culham BESS is expected to link to the Culham substation in 2027, if approved, when National Grid extends it as a component of a more extensive renovation of the electrical infrastructure at Culham Campus.
The plan would give Culham Campus a more sophisticated grid connection, enhancing power security, resilience, and stability and assisting UKAEA in realizing its goal of transforming the campus into a preeminent fusion facility globally.
In addition, Statera maintains over a gigawatt of battery schemes in the UK and is now building a 300MW battery at the Tilbury Substation in Essex. The UK company obtained planning permission in March to create a 290MW/1,740MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) close to Exeter, the county seat.
Global investor EQT purchased Statera in November of last year. Securing debt packages, like the funding for Statera’s Thurrock project, could be made easier by being a part of a bigger financial organization like EQT and by pairing the package with a long-term revenue guarantee like the capacity market.
