Researchers at the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) have created a universal battery charger for electric vehicles (EVs), which are predicted to be the mode of transportation of the future. The charger’s controller programming allows it to be used in different countries depending on the availability of an input power supply.
In addition, the charger can be utilized as a portable device—basically, an emergency kit—in the event that the battery pack deep discharges or a vehicle malfunctions.
According to Ronanki, there has always been a need to create a charging infrastructure that can function similarly to fossil fuel stations. The new charger can adjust the input power supply to meet the needs of electric vehicles and can provide an output voltage that is dependent on the voltages of the battery packs.
The study, which was led by Dr. Deepak Ronanki, an assistant professor in the IIT-M Department of Engineering Design, and published in the peer-reviewed IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics journal, is especially noteworthy because a major obstacle to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is the absence of infrastructure for seamless and speedy battery recharging.
“We were able to come up with a single charger that could be used to power all kinds of vehicles. A universal charger will function similarly to a gas pump, allowing you to conveniently refuel any kind of car, Ronanki told DH.
