By the end of November, Amara Raja Energy and Mobility Ltd. plans to start up at its new lead-acid battery recycling facility in Tamil Nadu. With the plant eventually planned to supply 25–30% of the company’s raw material demands, the greenfield facility aims to increase the company’s use of recycled lead in its manufacturing process.
In a post-earnings call, Amara Raja’s CFO, Delli Babu, stated that the Cheyyar-based plant will begin refining operations by the end of this month, with battery-breaking procedures set to start in the fourth quarter of the fiscal year. With ambitions to scale up to 150,000 metric tons in later phases, the plant, which was developed under the company’s subsidiary, Amara Raja Circular Solutions, will initially have an annual recycling capacity of 100,000 metric tons.
With cutting-edge equipment including an oxy-fuel system and a de-sulphurization system, the facility is built to reduce CO2 emissions and the amount of lead in slag, fostering high operating efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Recycling batteries is an essential tactic for guaranteeing supply chain stability and long-term cost effectiveness, particularly as the demand for raw materials rises. It also contributes significantly to lessening the environmental impact of battery waste. Eighty-three percent of the lead utilized in Amara Raja’s battery production is already recycled.
Under the company’s closed-loop approach, spent batteries are gathered from dealers, recycled by outside processors, and the recovered lead is used to make new batteries. Amara Raja Circular Solutions takes an active part in this process, offering consumers battery replacements while making sure that government rules regarding battery recovery goals are followed.
Amara Raja has established itself as a leader in the production of lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries for both domestic and foreign markets, serving industries such as automotive, industrial, and energy. By funding green technology projects, such as establishing a lead-acid battery recycling facility to lessen dependency on imported raw materials and promote environmental responsibility, the corporation has prioritized sustainability in recent years. Amara Raja is in the vanguard of India’s transition to a clean energy and circular economy thanks to its concentration on innovation and dedication to sustainable practices.
